Nicholson A5 Debarkers, like all Nicholson products, are constantly improved to increase their performance and ease of maintenance. The latest A5B Debarker advances include a new feedroll cylinder design that can be easily retrofitted to older A5 and A5A Debarkers.

In this retrofit, new feedroll cylinders are attached between the upper mainframe and the bottom roll support arms. The cylinders hang vertically, with the rod down as shown above.

This new A5B retrofit has many important advantages. Log weight is still carried by the lower roll support arms and does not pass through the support arm linkage. The loads carried by the cylinders are reduced and cylinder life is increased compared to other designs that attach them to the top roll arms.

The design also offers superior debris escapement. Any material that gets into the linkage area can now drop freely out the open bottom of the debarker. The feedroll cylinders are still enclosed to protect them from dirt and damage.

Repositioning the cylinders results in safer and easier access. The end cylinders are accessed through new doors (provided in the kit) at each end of the debarker. The center cylinders are easily accessed through the existing gear bay doors.

The Nicholson A5B Feedroll Cylinder Conversion Kit makes this important improvement to your A5 or A5A easy to do. The kit includes all the components that you need except miscellaneous hose fittings.

The basic conversion process consists of cutting new end access door openings, removing the old cylinders and mounts (not reused), welding in new cylinder mounts, remounting the new cylinders, and routing the new air hose. The kit’s new end doors and hinges are then added. Conversion instructions and drawings are provided. We can also provide a factory service technician to guide the retrofit process for you.
